About:

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, the Firebird’s Women’s Track & Field team brought smiles to the faces of many at Smother’s Elementary School in NE Washington, DC, participating in a Martha’s Table Mobile Market event which provides groceries to families within the school community. The Firebird are part of the Long Island Based ECC located in Central Islip.

The Firebirds were not just distributors of groceries which included handing out 250 turkeys (along with vegetables, fruits and other healthy food items), but also provided immeasurable assistance by setting up a Mobile Market at the school for families to come in and receive groceries. The student-athletes also broke down and reloaded the Martha’s Table Van with all items needed to make this event a success. A full scale grocery store atmosphere was created by the team and allowed for a festive start to the upcoming Thanksgiving week for all the families taking advantage of this opportunity.

“It’s very important to give back, but there is an extra amount of gratification from seeing children smile and hearing how appreciative these families were for the groceries they were able to receive with the holiday season approaching,” head coach Alton McKenzie explained. “The entire team thoroughly enjoyed participating and look forward to further opportunities to be better citizens, contributing valuable volunteer time in the DC community.”
